Opening day for Enlit Asia 2022 a dynamic start to 3 days in Bangkok

With several highlights of note, the Enlit Asia 2022 Bangkok summit commenced today. Roughly 10,000 delegates from electricity and energy businesses across the globe inclusive of Asia, Europe, America and beyond descended upon Bangkok to hear high-profile industry leaders speak.

Headlining the event with one of the welcome addresses was the Chairman & Senator for SETA. Also, opening the event was Richard Ireland, the CEO for Clarion Events Asia, who could barely contain his enthusiasm to being back in Bangkok for this long-anticipated Enlit event.

Our official supporting organisation, the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau, and utility, EGAT, also spoke at the opening ceremony. The EGAT Deputy Governor shared that although there is much work to be done, progress has been made and we must advance net zero roadmaps to achieve a fully decarbonised region.

The theme of “Accelerating ASEAN’s Energy Transition to Achieve Carbon Neutrality” was embraced wholly by all speakers inclusive of many of Enlit Asia’s partners, such as Trilliant, Energy Exemplar and Wärtsilä Energy.

During opening remarks, TNB’s President and chief executive officer (CEO), Dato’ Indera Ir. Baharin Bin Din, suggested that the region and ASEAN requires a more balanced energy mix.

“If we continue to experience the effects of high fuel prices, a more balanced fuel mix will enhance digital energy stability and security and can offset the potential implications of this fuel shortage. An interconnect grid will help individual countries to rely on our neighbours during times of crisis,” said Dato’ Indera.

Speakers showcasing the latest in updates and knowledge spoke at the CEO Energy Forum. Many touched upon several of the themes of the event such as Strengthening and Creating a Future Power Grid, Electricity Price Volatility due to Unexpected Situations and The Roadmap to Net-Zero Strategic Plan.

Speaking to the calibre of the events, they were supported by the highly esteemed Narin Phoawanich, assistant governor for EGAT and Pongsakorn Yuthagovit of PEA spoke at the ASEAN Leaders’ Panel: Net Zero – Establishing a Realistic ASEAN Roadmap. They shared the obstacles and hallmarks of a successful energy transition while sharing the challenges faced when incorporating renewables.

We also were very excited to partner on a keynote address, ‘Laying the foundation for Energy Metaverse’, by Jimmy Khoo, the CEO of SP Powergrid.

During the speech, Khoo shared his thoughts on how the metaverse can be used as a tool by utilities. In demand as ever, Jimmy also was a panellist on the Grid Modernisation: Priorities & Strategies for the Creation of a Smarter More Intelligent, Efficient & Sustainable Grid panel.
