OMRON launches AI-enabled detection camera for simplified quality control

OMRON’s new FHV7-AI Detection Camera combines machine vision and artificial intelligence to automate inspection with minimal setup time.


OMRON has expanded its industrial vision portfolio with the launch of the FHV7-AI Detection Camera, an all-in-one inspection system designed to bring artificial intelligence to factory-floor quality control. The new model integrates AI-based defect detection with a simplified configuration interface and a compact IP67-rated housing, reducing engineering effort and overall cost of ownership.

Developed at OMRON’s European Automation Centre in Hoofddorp, the Netherlands, the FHV7-AI is built to enable high-accuracy visual inspection without the need for advanced programming or specialist knowledge. The system can automatically learn from just a handful of sample images, cutting setup times from hours to minutes while maintaining consistent performance across product variants.

The camera applies AI-driven pattern recognition to identify missing components, scratches, dents, incorrect product types, or illegible date codes. By continuously adapting to variations in lighting and surface conditions, it delivers stable results in high-speed production environments where manual checks or conventional vision tools can struggle.

Ease of use is central to the new system. A step-by-step on-screen interface guides operators through lighting adjustment, focus calibration, reference image capture, and product registration. OMRON says this approach reduces dependence on experienced vision engineers, making deployment feasible for smaller operations or those with limited in-house expertise.

The compact design includes integrated white LED lighting and five autofocus lens options, removing the need for external housings or optical accessories. The IP67-rated enclosure allows direct installation on production lines exposed to dust or moisture, while a focal range of 59 mm to 2,000 mm accommodates varied product sizes and rapid changeovers.

OMRON claims that the reduced part-number structure also simplifies stocking and maintenance for OEMs and system integrators, supporting more standardised equipment inventories.

By combining AI-based analysis with a cost-effective and scalable architecture, the FHV7-AI aims to make advanced inspection accessible to a wider manufacturing base. It targets sectors such as food and beverage, packaging, automotive, and consumer goods, where traceability, accuracy, and compliance are under increasing scrutiny.
