Ammonia power solutions company Amogy has received an approval in principle (AiP) from Lloyd’s Register for its ammonia-to-power system for maritime applications. The solution will be demonstrated on board a vessel in 2023.

The company’s newly granted AiP covers an ammonia power system that generates electricity from liquid ammonia to provide vessels with power. Amogy aims to achieve this by cracking the liquid ammonia to hydrogen and using the produced hydrogen to generate electrical power through proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells.

Amogy will now continue with technology qualification and type approval to ensure the ammonia-to-power solution is fit for use on maritime vessels.

Amogy has outlined plans for a claimed world-first zero-emission, ammonia-powered maritime demonstration, which is set to take place in 2023. Furthermore, the company is collaborating with partners in the ammonia and shipping value chains to evaluate its clean power solutions for use in upcoming commercial new-builds and retrofit vessels.

“This important milestone is further validation in Amogy as we continue to work toward full commercialization of our innovative ammonia technology in the maritime industry,” said Seonghoon Woo, CEO of Amogy. “As we get closer to bringing our system to market, it is critical to solve unique safety challenges for the design and operation of ammonia-fueled vessels, and our team is committed to working with key partners, such as Lloyd’s Register, to enable its safe adoption by the industry.”
