Lehmann Marine to equip six fish-farm support vessels with 6.6MWh of Cube battery systems

LFP-based battery technology provider Lehmann Marine has received a significant order from electrical engineering system integrator Elmarin to supply six Cube battery systems with a total capacity of 6.6MWh for fish-farm support vessels.

According to the partners, the delicate ecosystem of a fish farm is an ideal application area for emissions-free and noise-reduced vessels with hybrid electric propulsion. The Cube battery systems selected for this project are made in Germany and reportedly offer flexibility, safety and efficiency. With their modular design, the batteries can be adapted to the specific requirements of the fish-farm support vessels and the limited space on board.

Lehmann Marine also asserted that the flexibility in configuration is combined with easy maintenance, thanks to the small, easily accessible battery modules. The use of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology is intended to ensure not only high performance and reliability but also improved safety during operation. Compared with traditional nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries, LFP batteries are reportedly much safer. In a thermal runaway, only gas is released and vented outside.

In related news, classification society RINA has awarded type approval for Lehmann Marine’s latest Cobra battery system, highlighting its high safety standard and denoting its suitability for use within maritime applications.
