Affinity Water is launching its smart metering programme with an approximately 20,000 household and small business pilot.

The trial, to take place in the Harlow and Bishops Stortford areas in Hertfordshire, UK, is due to launch in February 2025 and serve as a preface for a broader 380,000 smart meter rollout over the next five years.

Britain’s water companies are all at various stages of smart meter rollouts as part of efforts to enhance water conservation and management.

“The launch of our smart metering programme marks an exciting step forward in how we manage and conserve water across our region,” commented Geordie Wilson, head of Smart Metering at Affinity Water.

“Smart metering is a key part of our commitment to addressing water stress in the southeast and ensuring a reliable supply for future generations.”

The pilot is due to see the installation of approximately 20,000 smart meters in household properties and 20 in non-household properties in its initial phase, with larger-scale installations to follow.

With the smart meters, Affinity Water expects to help customers reduce their consumption, detect and repair leaks more efficiently and minimise disruptions.

Customers are due to be provided with accurate and regular data, enabling them to help track their water consumption and make sustainable choices, as well as be billed on actual consumption.

The initiative is part of Affinity Water’s broader effort to address water stress in the region and ensure a reliable water supply for the future, a company release states.

Under the company’s water resource management plan, targets include reducing per capita consumption and halving leakage by 2050.

Currently its per capita consumption is one of the highest in Britain, at 157l per person compared to the national average of 145l.

Affinity Water’s smart metering initiative is being delivered together with Arqiva, Clancy, and Bregan MainsFlow, combining expertise in connectivity, installation and meter replacement.
