GaN to power next-gen net zero electronics

Vertical GaN technology could transform high-voltage power electronics. CSA Catapult’s new white paper highlights vertical GaN-on-GaN devices’ potential, emphasising improved efficiency and thermal management. The report outlines applications in EV charging, renewable energy, and data centres. It urges UK supply chain readiness to capitalise on these opportunities.

The Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult in the UK has released a pivotal white paper advocating for the adoption of vertical GaN technology in high-voltage power electronics.

By focusing on GaN-on-GaN devices, which conduct current through the device’s thickness, the report argues for reduced defect density, enhanced thermal management, and superior voltage capabilities. The technology promises not just efficiency improvements but also smaller, more reliable systems vital for net-zero infrastructure.
