Emsur develops a greaseproof paper lid for Upfield in collaborative breatkthrough

Emsur has has introduced a groundbreaking grease-proof paper, which it says represents a “revolutionary advancement” in packaging solutions for Upfield’s plant butters and spreads.

Unveiling a grease-proof paper lid developed at Innotech, the open innovation centre of Grupo Lantero, to complement Upfield’s innovative packaging solutions, it is precision-engineered for Upfield’s latest packaging.

A grease-proof lid is seamlessly integrated into brand-new Upfield paper-based packaging alongside some of Upfield’s most iconic brands and was first launched at the back end of 2023 in Austria on Flora Plant.

The lid serves as a viable alternative to the conventional aluminium (ALU), standard prevalent in the market.

This achievement has resulted in a packaging solution that ensures the product’s protection throughout the entire supply chain. Moreover, the paper-based nature of the packaging guarantees easy disposal in paper bins.

Upfield announced the world’s first plastic-free, recyclable tub for its plant butters and spreads. This launch signifies the initiation of Upfield’s shift toward a paper-based solution across its portfolio, aligning with the company’s ambitious goal to reduce plastic content by 80% by 2030.

The paper tubs, developed from compressed wet paper fibres, boast waterproof, oil-proof qualities and are recyclable within local paper waste streams.

José Herráez, Emsur’s general manager, emphasised the importance of the close collaboration with customers to fully understand their needs and to provide the most efficient solutions.

“Only by being close to our customers we can understand their needs and proactively work in identifying the best solutions. This is the way Emsur understands the business,” Herráez added.

Álvaro Bernad, chief innovation officer at Grupo Lantero, underscored the significance of Emsur’s grease-proof paper lid, noting its role in making the tub a fully sustainable material.

Walter Turci, Innotech director, said the lid ensures similar performance in packaging machines for food producers and an enhanced product experience for end-customers.

“Overcoming challenges related to fat resistance and sealability, the Innotech team has dedicated over 24 months to this project and has proudly ended presenting an innovative solution that meets our customer expectations,” Turci noted.
