ELES pilots Advanced Energy Management System with Japan’s NEDO and Hitachi

Slovenian-based state utility ELES has completed the deployment of a cloud-based advanced energy management system (AEMS) under efforts to leverage modern and innovative use cases for grid reliability.

The transmission network operator partnered with Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and Hitachi to deploy the AEMS since 2018.

The deployment of the AEMS is part of the smart community demonstration project in which ELES seeks to leverage services including islanding, voltage dips mitigation measures, and ancillary services to stabilise the transmission network using flexibility.

The services will be offered to large-scale power consumers and electric power retailers.

Hitachi provided the AEMS to link energy storage systems installed by ELES for consumers in the BTC district of Ljubljana and by Hitachi in the Idrija district.

The storage batteries which were installed in the power distribution grid in the Idrija district.

The pilot will explore how energy storage, flexibility and digital energy management can help address grid failures due to harsh weather (such as the 2014 outage that was a result of a severe cold snap that hit Slovenia), voltage instability due to events such as lightning and to ensure frequency regulation to address renewables fluctuations.

Islanding, in the event of power outages, will be used to isolate targeted areas including important facilities such as hospitals from the power grid and ensure the supply of power using storage batteries, according to a statement.

The results of the pilot will enable Hitachi and NEDO to develop a service for the European market and in the process help the bloc to accelerate its digital and green transformation.

The pilot will run through March 2022.

In the first phase of the pilot, deployed in 2016, a distribution management system was developed to help two Slovenian distribution operators to maintain appropriate voltage and shorten power outage time.
