E.ON selects Wipro as partner for digital transformation initiatives

German multinational energy company E.ON has selected Wipro as its partner for the group’s digital transformation programmes within the financial area.

The utility will leverage Wipro’s Application Maintenance and Support Services to manage projects on the SAP S/4HANA IT platform. The IT platform, which currently supports over 16,000 users across eight countries, has been deployed as part of efforts by the utility to centralise its commercial business processes. E.ON says the deal with Wipro will help the company execute its digital transformation reliably and efficiently.

Michael Syring, Head – corporate digital technology, E.ON Digital Technology GmbH, said: “The S4U Programme is a key element of our digital transformation. It is the common platform for highly automated and excellent commercial processes.”

The announcement follows E.ON intensifying its digitalisation efforts by appointing a new leadership team for the company’s digital arm. Sebastian Weber, who led the digital transformation initiatives for E.ON Germany Sales as Senior Vice President, and Christopher d’Arcy, who was responsible for the development and operation of E.ON’s group-wide technology platforms, became managing directors of E.ON Digital Technology GmbH as of July 1, 2021. The two are expected to bring the experience they got in the digitalisation sector from E.ON, Microsoft and Ernst & Young to help the utility enhance its operations by adopting innovative and advanced solutions.

Michael Seiger, Country Head – Germany, Wipro Limited, added: “Technology convergence and operational agility have become strategic needs for organisations in the energy industry to improve efficiency and effectiveness. E.ON is driving the green energy transition in Europe and we look forward to supporting them with innovative technologies to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing prosumer world.”

Migration to Microsoft Azure

In early August, E.ON announced that it will be migrating all IT applications from its own data centres to Microsoft Azure by 2023 with Wipro handling the migration process. With the move to Microsoft Azure, E.ON hopes to make it’s IT processes more efficient, flexible, and climate-friendly, according to the utility. The migration is also expected to enable E.ON to accelerate the development of new solutions and services for customers and employees.

E.ON has five data centres in Germany and the UK whose operations will be transferred to the cloud for cost savings.

Sebastian Weber, reiterated: “Cloud transformation is a key element of our journey to a digital, sustainable energy future and an essential part of our Cloud First strategy.

“Tomorrow’s energy world requires innovative and sustainable solutions. Microsoft’s agile cloud platform, Wipro’s cloud expertise and our experience in automation and artificial intelligence are contributing significantly to making E.ON even more sustainable and digital.”
