Duke Energy Florida adopts new tool for managed EV charging

Duke Energy Florida, an American electric power and natural gas holding company, has a new programme that will provide credits to customers who charge their EVs during off-peak times.

On March 22, Duke Energy Florida and Itron announced a collaboration to deploy Itron’s new DER Optimizer, powered by its demand response platform, IntelliSOURCE.

Itron said it wants its demand response platform to be the foundation of a broader distributed energy resource management (DERM) solution because it recognizes the rapidly increasing number of DERs that utilities need to monitor, optimize and orchestrate to maintain grid reliability and safety and meet decarbonization goals.

The DER Optimizer enables utilities to monitor residential electric vehicle (EV) charging and manage holistic residential EV charging programmes at scale.

Duke Energy Florida will integrate the new solution into its existing Itron demand response platform to run a new managed EV charging program. The programme will identify and provide credits for EV owners to charge their vehicles during off-peak hours.

Itron is using an EV telematics platform provided by Rolling Energy Resources to connect to cars through their native APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) to allow on-boarding for customers and their vehicles into the programme without needing to install additional hardware or communicating charging stations.

The programme will begin in Q1 2022 and run for four years. During that time, Duke Energy Florida will use Itron’s DER Optimizer to collect permissible EV charging session data in near-real time and gain insights into residential EV charging behavior.
