Connectivity modules selected for Taipower’s AMI project

IoT firm Ubiik has partnered with cellular IoT connectivity firm Sequans Communications to ensure Taiwan Power Company’s (Taipower) smart meter connectivity is resilient and secure.

Secure, fast, and resilient communications of smart meter data are key to successful advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) rollouts and operations.

Ubiik will leverage Sequans Communications’ LTE/NB-IoT module to connect Taipower’s smart meters.

Today, Ubiik’s IoT network communicates more than 120 million smart meter readings per day in Taiwan, enabling real-time monitoring of consumer energy consumption and grid operation.

Ubiik’s Weightless wireless network will be supported by the LTE/NB-IoT modules to provide a digital platform that Taipower can leverage to accelerate its digital transformation, smart billing and smart grid journey, according to the statement.

The integration will enable a field area network to be built and a wide range of AMI services to be provided to electricity, water and gas customers.

In addition to delivering ultra-low-power consumption capabilities to Ubiik’s offering, the modules are, according to Ubiik, “the world’s only cellular IoT module supporting an EAL5+ secure enclave for integrated SIM (ieUICC) capability that is compliant with GSMA standards.”

The modules support a single rail power supply starting at 2.2 V, the lowest level in the industry, allowing for better efficiency of the internal power management unit, further reducing power consumption, and lowering battery and BOM cost, according to the statement.

Tien-haw Peng, the CEO of Ubiik said: “We selected Sequans Monarch 2 GM02S module as the basis for our next generation of LTE communication modules for smart electricity meters because its advanced security features and integrated SIM help us advance our leadership in the industry.”

Georges Karam, the CEO of Sequans added: “Ubiik has already built one of the largest LPWAN networks for electricity AMI in the world and we are pleased to be able to support them in their next phase of development with our Monarch 2 technology.”
