Aggreko delivers hybrid energy for wind farm

Aggreko provides hybrid power to safeguard Scottish wind farm. Douglas West Wind Farm required a temporary solution during a planned six-week network outage. Aggreko delivered a low-emission hybrid energy system, ensuring the continuous operation of all 13 turbines, reducing emissions, and maintaining asset integrity throughout the grid downtime.

Aggreko has delivered a comprehensive hybrid energy solution to Douglas West Wind Farm in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, ensuring uninterrupted operation of its 13 turbines during a planned six-week network outage. The intervention came as the installation of a new super transformer necessitated a temporary power solution to prevent moisture build-up in electrical components and maintain hydraulic systems.

Natural Power’s asset management team appointed Aggreko to design and implement a sustainable power system. The solution included a fleet of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and generators powered by hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), achieving up to a 90% reduction in emissions. The site utilised 13 125 kVA HVO-fuelled generators and 13 120 kWh battery systems.

Aggreko’s Remote Management (ARM) technology played a crucial role, employing GPRS to transmit real-time data from generators to diagnostics software. This allowed for optimisation of equipment efficiency and runtime. Additionally, Aggreko’s fuel management service ensured consistent fuel supply, safeguarding against any power interruptions.

Craig Fleming, Utilities Sector Sales Manager for the UK and Ireland at Aggreko, emphasised the importance of such solutions: “Wind now accounts for almost a third of the UK’s electricity, and operators can’t afford disruption. This project shows exactly how Aggreko steps in; delivering engineered, low-emission power solutions that keep critical assets protected, maintain operational integrity, and minimise environmental impact, even during extended grid outages.”

Each of the 13 turbines, with a height of 149.9 metres from ground to blade tip, is capable of producing 3.6 MW, underscoring the scale and significance of maintaining their operation. As wind energy continues to grow as a pivotal component of the UK’s electricity supply, robust solutions like Aggreko’s are essential to mitigate potential disruptions and support the sector’s expansion.
