ABB to provide technology for BC Ferries vessels

ABB secures contract for BC Ferries’ hybrid-electric vessels. The new ships are designed to reduce emissions and underwater noise, contributing to quieter operations in the Strait of Georgia. This move aligns with BC Ferries’ commitment to sustainable and efficient maritime transport, enhancing system resilience and environmental stewardship.


ABB will deliver a comprehensive power, propulsion, and control package for four new hybrid-electric ferries commissioned by British Columbia Ferry Services (BC Ferries). As one of the world’s largest ferry operators, BC Ferries manages 25 routes to 47 terminals, transporting approximately 9.7 million vehicles and 22.7 million passengers annually. With the province’s population projected to grow by 44% by 2046, demand on the ferry system is expected to increase substantially.

The hybrid-electric vessels, replacing four ageing ships, form part of BC Ferries’ ‘New Major Vessels’ initiative. This programme aims to ensure safe, environmentally sustainable, and reliable operations in the Strait of Georgia. The order was confirmed in the fourth quarter of 2025, with delivery from China Merchants Industry Weihai (CMI Weihai) Shipyard set to begin in 2029. Financial terms remain undisclosed.

Equipped with ABB’s Azipod® electric propulsion system, the vessels promise enhanced reliability with fewer moving parts compared to mechanical thrusters. The design also reduces underwater radiated noise, crucial for protecting at-risk species like the Southern Resident killer whale in one of the world’s richest marine ecosystems. ABB’s Onboard DC Grid™ will optimise energy flow, minimising conversion losses and enhancing overall system efficiency, thus lowering emissions.

Each ferry will support up to 70 megawatt-hours of battery storage, facilitating hybrid operations now and a future transition to fully electric, zero-emission service. The hybrid system uses biofuel or renewable diesel, balancing energy between generators and batteries. The vessels can connect to shore charging systems exceeding 60 megawatts — over 100 times more powerful than North America’s fastest public EV chargers — supporting rapid turnaround in ports and paving the way for zero-emission operations.

ABB’s digital solutions will provide crews with comprehensive operational insights, promoting safe and efficient journeys. These technologies are designed to advance BC Ferries’ goal of enhancing passenger experience while reducing environmental impact.

BC Ferries’ President & CEO, Nicolas Jimenez, highlighted the significance of the New Major Vessels, stating, “Their design reflects what our customers value most: comfort, accessibility, and environmental stewardship. These ships are a critical part of building a cleaner, quieter, and more reliable ferry system for the future.”

Rune Braastad, President of ABB’s Marine & Ports division, added, “We proudly support BC Ferries’ goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, striving to meet British Columbia’s 2030 emissions reduction target by at least 27% from 2008 levels, supporting a cleaner future and the transition to all-electric operation.”
