France to ban plastic packaging for fruit & veg

The French government has recently announced that it is banning the sale of fruit and vegetables in plastic packaging.

The new law comes into effect on 1 January 2022, with a list of around 30 fruits and vegetables that are subject to the changes which includes leeks, courgettes, aubergines, peppers, cucumbers, potatoes and carrots, large tomatoes, onions and turnips, cabbage, cauliflower, squash, parsnips, radishes, and root vegetables.

The government said it expects to prevent the use of more than one billion plastic packages a year with the new regulation, which forms part of France’s Anti-waste Law.

Further items will be added to the list over the coming years, with more delicate fruits such as berries being banned from sale in plastic by 2026, reported UK’s The Independent (source linked).
