Bezant begins commercial production at Hope and Gorob

Bezant has started commercial production at Hope and Gorob, Namibia. The copper and gold operation is targeting at least 9,000 tonnes of October throughput before ramping towards nameplate capacity.

Bezant Resources has started commercial production at its Hope and Gorob copper and gold project in Namibia, moving the mine and processing plant beyond commissioning as the operation begins producing concentrate for sale.

More than 40,000 tonnes of material had been mined when commercial production was announced, including around 10,000 tonnes held at the processing plant, while Bezant is targeting minimum throughput of 9,000 tonnes during October. First saleable concentrate is expected later in the month, with plant output due to increase progressively towards nameplate capacity before the end of 2026.

Bringing a new mineral processing operation into commercial production depends on several stages reaching stable output together, because mining, haulage, crushing, grinding and flotation all influence the amount and quality of concentrate leaving the site. A plant can be mechanically complete while still producing inconsistently if ore feed varies too widely or one section cannot sustain the throughput achieved elsewhere.

Material arriving from the mine first has to be reduced to a size at which copper bearing minerals can be separated from the surrounding rock. Crushing handles the larger size reduction before grinding breaks the material further, exposing more mineral surface and allowing the subsequent separation process to work effectively.

Grinding performance has a direct effect on recovery because particles that remain too coarse can leave valuable minerals locked inside waste rock, while excessive grinding consumes more energy and can create very fine material that behaves poorly during flotation. Operators therefore have to balance liberation against throughput rather than simply running the mill for the longest possible time.

During flotation, reagents and controlled aeration alter the surface behaviour of selected minerals so that copper bearing particles attach to bubbles and can be separated from the remaining material. Recovery depends on particle size, mineralogy, reagent dosage, air flow and residence time, leaving the circuit sensitive to changes in the ore entering the plant.

The stockpile already accumulated beside the processing operation gives Hope and Gorob some separation between mine output and plant demand, allowing the concentrator to continue running during short interruptions to haulage or mining. Material from different areas can also be blended where grade or processing characteristics vary, reducing sudden changes in the feed presented to the plant.

Early results have been encouraging, with Bezant reporting copper grades broadly consistent with its resource estimates and Hope open pit model while gold grades have exceeded forecast in material mined so far. Those initial figures still have to be tested over sustained production, since a short period of favourable ore does not establish the average grade or recovery available across the wider operation.

No major mechanical problems were reported during the initial operating period, although increasing throughput towards the design rate will place greater load on conveyors, crushers, mills, pumps and flotation equipment. Components that perform reliably during commissioning runs can behave differently once the plant operates continuously and maintenance windows become shorter.

Concentrate leaving the flotation circuit must still be prepared for transport and sale before the contained metal enters the next stage of the supply chain. Product grade, moisture and consistency influence handling and commercial terms, while transport from the mine towards export infrastructure adds another operational requirement beyond the boundary of the processing plant.

Bezant is already assessing a second development phase intended to increase throughput by up to 40%, although the most useful information for that work will come from the plant now entering service. Actual operating data can show whether crushing, grinding, flotation, pumping or materials handling becomes the limiting stage once production settles into a routine.

Increasing one section in isolation would achieve little if the additional material simply queues elsewhere, so expansion design has to follow the constraint that emerges from sustained operation rather than the bottleneck assumed during engineering studies. Ore characteristics can also shift as mining moves through the deposit, changing the amount of work required from the same equipment.

Further drilling around the Hope and Gorob system is intended to support longer term expansion planning, with additional mineral resources potentially feeding a larger operation if the processing route can accommodate them. More tonnes in the ground only translate into production when mine scheduling, plant capacity, recovery and concentrate logistics remain aligned.

Commercial production places those operating disciplines ahead of the development milestones that dominated the project until now. Bezant has built and commissioned the mine and processing route; October throughput, first concentrate sales and the ramp towards nameplate capacity will establish how consistently that infrastructure can convert mined material into a saleable product.
