ByteSnap launches embedded project risk calculator

ByteSnap has launched a calculator for embedded project feasibility assessment. The online tool gives manufacturers and product developers an early view of technical, regulatory, supply chain, and team capability risks before committing budget to embedded systems development.

ByteSnap Design has launched a free online Project Success Calculator to help manufacturers and product developers assess embedded systems feasibility before moving into full development.

The Birmingham-based embedded electronics and software consultancy has built the tool to give early visibility of risk across hardware, firmware, software, compliance, team capability, and development timing. It guides users through a 10-question assessment covering project type, development stage, timeline, regulatory exposure, technical challenges, internal skills, and risk tolerance.

After completion, the tool generates a personalised Success Probability Score and prioritised guidance on risk mitigation. No detailed technical documentation is required, with the assessment aimed at users who understand their project goals and high-level requirements but may not yet have a full specification, compliance roadmap, or engineering delivery plan.

The calculator draws on more than 400 man-years of embedded systems project experience across ByteSnap’s engineering teams. Its methodology reflects delivery experience across IoT and connected devices, ATEX and intrinsically safe equipment, FPGA and custom silicon implementations, firmware, embedded software, medical devices, safety-critical systems, and industrial automation equipment.

Graeme Wintle, Director at ByteSnap Design, said: “In 2026, the margin for error in electronics development has essentially vanished. Component scarcity, tightening cybersecurity regulations like the EU Cyber Resilience Act, and increasingly complex SoC integration mean that projects which start without a clear-eyed view of their risks rarely recover from early missteps. We built this tool so that any manufacturer, regardless of how technical they are, can get an honest assessment of where their project stands before a single component is ordered.”

Embedded development programmes now carry a heavier mix of technical and compliance risk. Industrial products increasingly combine connected hardware, firmware, cloud interfaces, cyber security requirements, and sector-specific standards. In medical, automotive, hazardous environment, and industrial control applications, early architectural decisions can affect certification routes, component availability, software maintenance, and production cost.

The calculator identifies potential bottlenecks around regulatory requirements including IEC 62304, ISO 26262, ATEX certification, EN 18031, and IEC 62443. It also assesses whether hardware and firmware specifications are achievable against the proposed timeline, and whether internal teams may need additional engineering support before prototyping or pre-production.

ByteSnap has delivered embedded systems projects since its founding in 2008, working across energy, industrial equipment, medical devices, IoT, transport, and scientific instrumentation. The new calculator gives that delivery experience a front-end diagnostic role, allowing development teams to test assumptions before a stalled project becomes a rescue job.

The free assessment is available through ByteSnap Design’s embedded systems Project Success Calculator.
