Teledyne FLIR unveils Lepton XDS camera module

Teledyne FLIR OEM unveils the Lepton XDS camera module. The compact dual-thermal-and-visible camera integrates patented MSX technology, enabling sharper thermal imagery for OEM applications. It is designed to expedite development in various sectors, including robotics and smart infrastructure, by reducing risk and accelerating time-to-market.

Teledyne FLIR OEM, a division of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated, has introduced the Lepton XDS — a compact camera module combining dual-thermal and visible imaging capabilities. This module incorporates Teledyne FLIR’s patented MSX (Multi-Spectral Dynamic Imaging) technology, tailored for space- and power-constrained Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) products.

The ITAR-free Lepton XDS is engineered for seamless integration, aiming to minimise development risk and quicken time-to-market for embedded, mobile, and industrial applications. It couples a 160 × 120 radiometric Lepton 3.5 micro-thermal camera with a five-megapixel visible sensor. The MSX technology enhances thermal imagery in real time by superimposing visible-image edges onto the thermal scene, delivering improved detail and context. This capability, previously associated with more costly, higher-resolution systems, is now accessible for applications such as fire detection, electric vehicle battery monitoring, robotics, smart infrastructure, and health and safety systems.

Mike Walters, Vice President of Product Management at Teledyne FLIR OEM, stated, “MSX technology has long been a defining advantage of Teledyne FLIR, and with Lepton XDS, we are making that capability accessible in a compact, OEM-ready module. By combining a visible camera, a proven micro-thermal sensor, onboard Prism ISP processing, and direct access to radiometric overlays including spot meters and regions of interest, we’re accelerating innovation and enabling OEMs to deliver clearer thermal imagery for faster user interpretation.”

The integrated FLIR Prism ISP software ensures real-time image enhancement, offering a suite of advanced image-processing features such as thermal-visible fusion and an industry-first radiometric JPEG (RJPEG) output. The module includes measurement and visualisation tools like regions of interest, spot temperature measurements, isotherms, and customisable colour palettes. It integrates seamlessly with the Teledyne FLIR OEM software ecosystem for analysis and reporting.

Optimised for size, weight, and power (SWaP), the Lepton XDS features an industry-standard USB output, making it ideal for battery-powered and always-on systems. It is ITAR-free and classified under 6a993.b.4.b, allowing for broad commercial application globally.

Teledyne FLIR OEM supports scalable production with its robust global technical services and high-volume manufacturing systems, having delivered over six million Lepton units. The Lepton XDS will be showcased at booth 7B6 during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, from 2-5 March 2026.
