Industry obligations change under WGC BREF regulations

EU waste gas regulations mandate continuous monitoring by 2026. Industrial operators must install measurement systems to comply with new EU environmental laws. Non-compliance could lead to significant penalties, including operational shutdowns and fines reaching up to 3% of annual turnover. Companies should act promptly to mitigate these risks.

ENVEA, a global authority in environmental monitoring and process optimisation, has announced that EU environmental legislation concerning waste gases is set to change. Industrial operators engaged in chemical activities will soon be legally required to implement continuous measurement and monitoring systems.

The regulatory update, known as WGC BREF, falls under the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) and will come into effect on 12 December 2026. David Galvez, ENVEA’s Application Manager for Heavy Industries, emphasises the gravity of these changes: “The upcoming IED BAT regulations must be taken seriously. Non-compliance risks operational shutdowns and costly penalties of up to 3% of a company’s annual turnover. By taking swift action and choosing a partner with a proven track record in IED installations and regulatory understanding, these dangers can potentially be avoided.”

ENVEA has developed a comprehensive WGC BREF fact sheet to assist industrial operators in navigating these changes. The document details new rules and thresholds, identifies affected chemical activities, and provides guidance on achieving compliance. Galvez adds, “The WGC BREF changes are a great opportunity for operators and manufacturers to build trust with stakeholders and customers. Communicating with transparency, using credible and verified data, helps to boost an organisation’s integrity and ensure it remains compliant.”

The deadline for WGC BREF compliance is December 2026. For further information, interested parties can download the ENVEA guide or visit their dedicated campaign page.
