Marks & Spencer has introduced RE:Spark, a pioneering supply chain decarbonisation programme, in collaboration with Schneider Electric. This initiative seeks to fast-track the integration of renewable electricity across M&S’s global supply chain, aligning with the ambitious Plan A sustainability strategy to attain net zero emissions throughout its value chain by 2040.
The RE:Spark programme is a testament to M&S’s dedication to effectuate change beyond its operational confines. Key features include the launch of a digital hub, powered by Schneider Electric’s Zeigo Hub. This platform provides a centralised portal where suppliers can submit emissions data, monitor decarbonisation progress, and access tailored carbon reduction guidance through specialised resources.
Additionally, M&S will conduct regional market briefs and webinars to educate suppliers on renewable electricity procurement in five critical regions: Vietnam, Turkey, India, China, and Bangladesh. Strategic advisory services will be offered to assist suppliers in evaluating and implementing clean energy solutions, such as onsite solar installations, energy attribute certificates, green tariffs, and power purchase agreements (PPAs). Furthermore, the programme facilitates demand aggregation for PPAs, enabling smaller suppliers to engage in multi-buyer cohorts and secure renewable electricity on a larger scale.
Initially concentrating on high-impact areas within M&S’s fashion and food supply chains, the programme plans to broaden its reach over the next three years. Katharine Beacham, Head of Sourcing and Materials in Fashion, Home & Beauty at M&S, emphasised the collaborative nature of sustainability efforts: “We believe sustainability should be embedded in everything we do, from how we source products to supporting our supply partners and customers to do the right thing. RE:Spark is designed to ignite new ideas and unlock renewable energy opportunities for our supply base so we can build a supply chain that’s fit for the future and the planet.”
Steve Wilhite, Executive Vice President of SE Advisory Services, remarked, “As an energy technology company, we’re proud to be working with M&S to help suppliers overcome barriers to renewable electricity adoption. RE:Spark is a powerful example of how collaboration can drive scalable, impactful change across global supply chains.”
This initiative underscores the growing trend in the industry to leverage partnerships and technology to meet stringent sustainability targets. With increasing regulatory pressures and consumer demand for transparency, businesses are compelled to innovate and adapt. As the programme expands, it will likely serve as a model for other companies seeking to transition to a low-carbon economy.
