Silvery Tweed Cereals, a prominent supplier to the UK’s breakfast cereal, bread, and bakery sectors, has announced a remarkable 35% reduction in total net emissions across its operations. This achievement is detailed in the company’s newly released 2025 sustainability report.
The progress follows a year-long partnership with environmental consultants, Beyondly, aimed at establishing a comprehensive emissions baseline across Scope 1 (direct activities) and Scope 2 (purchased energy consumption) emissions as of 2024. This collaboration provided a clear framework for implementing environmental improvements.
The 2024 energy report highlighted electricity consumption as the primary contributor to the company’s carbon footprint, identifying the potential to reduce carbon emissions by 272 tonnes through targeted energy-saving initiatives. In response, Silvery Tweed transitioned to sourcing energy entirely from renewable sources, a crucial factor in achieving the 35% emissions reduction recorded in the latest report.
Bob Gladstone, Managing Director of Silvery Tweed Cereals, stated, “Although our business is below the carbon reporting threshold, carbon management has long been a priority for us. We have opted against carbon offsetting and instead decided to invest the money we would have spent on carbon credits into making our operations more energy efficient.”
The collaboration with Beyondly extends beyond historical performance analysis, focusing on future capital investments and operational enhancements. Following the 2025 report’s insights, the company has identified and begun upgrading its compressed air systems, an investment expected to further decrease carbon emissions.
Mr. Gladstone also highlighted the alignment between the company’s agricultural heritage and its strategy for sustainable food manufacturing: “As a business rooted in agriculture and food production, we have a responsibility to operate sustainably and protect the environment we all depend on. Sustainability isn’t just a goal for our business, it’s a commitment to our customers, our community, and the planet.”
Employing over 70 individuals and sourcing grain primarily within a 40-mile radius of its Berwick-upon-Tweed headquarters, Silvery Tweed Cereals assures its manufacturing partners of its ongoing commitment to operational sustainability, ensuring a resilient and environmentally responsible supply chain.
