Dr. Schär, a prominent provider of gluten-free and specialised nutrition products, has reached a significant milestone in animal welfare. The company now exclusively utilises barn-raised, cage-free eggs across all its global production facilities. This accomplishment concludes a rigorous nine-year supply chain initiative, launched in 2016, aimed at enhancing quality and animal welfare standards worldwide.
“Achieving the exclusive use of cage-free eggs in all our sites represents a key milestone in Dr. Schär’s vision,” stated Hannes Berger, CEO of Dr. Schär. “This is not just a production milestone, but a concrete commitment to a more sustainable future, combining quality, animal welfare, and responsibility toward our consumers.”
The initiative sees Dr. Schär voluntarily surpass current regulations in several markets. While the United Kingdom shows strong adoption of cage-free systems, 38.1% of European hens remain in enriched cages. The European Commission is contemplating a full ban on all cage systems by the end of 2026.
Completing this transition by the end of November 2025, Dr. Schär reinforces its commitment to responsible sourcing, often anticipating local regulations and market trends. The company’s efforts include years of gradual implementation, supplier collaboration, and continuous audits to ensure high standards of quality and animal welfare in its specialty products.
Dr. Schär stated it will “continue to innovate and guide the value chain, demonstrating that sustainability and quality can go hand in hand.”
