WELTEC BIOPOWER has been commissioned to build a biomethane plant for Evergreen Agricultural Enterprises Limited at its Monasterevin headquarters in County Kildare, Ireland. The €50 million project, expected to begin operations in mid-2026, involves a construction period of 11 months.
The facility will feature four digesters and a stainless-steel secondary digester, each with a capacity of 4,900 cubic metres. These units will primarily process production residues and by-products from the Irish beer and whiskey sectors, materials unsuitable for animal feed and thus non-competitive with feed production. Additionally, three tanks will store liquid substrates.
“The plant will be constructed in just six months of active building time, with mechanical completion anticipated by year-end,” stated Tobias Gerweler, Managing Director of WELTEC BIOPOWER. Patrick Meade highlighted the strategic decision to exclude grass silage to avoid competition with the livestock industry. A combined heat and power plant on site will generate approximately 1 megawatt of power and supply heat to the digesters.
The plant will produce around 1,300 standard cubic metres of biomethane per hour, equivalent to 110 GWh annually. The digestate output of 65,000 tonnes will be stored in a covered concrete lagoon and distributed to farmers in liquid and solid forms.
Patrick Meade noted that WELTEC BIOPOWER was awarded the contract due to both technical strengths and short delivery timelines. This project aligns with Ireland’s goal to produce 5.7 TWh of biomethane annually by 2030, necessitating the expansion of existing biogas facilities and the development of advanced plants such as Evergreen’s.
