Yamaha debuts Harmo electric outboard system at International Boatbuilders’ Exhibition & Conference
The Harmo electric outboard system has been debuted by Yamaha Marine at the 2021 International Boatbuilders’ Exhibition & Conference (IBEX) in Tampa, Florida.
The Harmo system couples a 48V power supply with a high-yield, low-drag 3.7kW motor. The setup’s rim-drive electric motor and encased impeller can provide 225 lb [102kg] of static thrust, equivalent to a 9.9hp ICE-powered motor. The run time of the system depends on the battery type fitted, its size, configuration and operational parameters.

Included as part of the system are the Helm Master EX system controls with a joystick to offer easy movement, and Digital Electric Steering (DES) to provide a 140° total steering angle for improved handling characteristics. The control system enables a single-engine boat to rotate within its own length, and offers lateral operation in twin-engine mode. A 74° tilt angle helps keeps the impeller out of the water when not being used.
“Harmo is the perfect system for horsepower or internal-combustion restricted waterways. Ultimately, it is up to our boat builder customers to decide how to integrate it into their boats, and we are eager to see the result,” said Ben Speciale, president, Yamaha Marine US business unit.
The system is currently available through boat builders in Europe, with the USA expecting to receive units in 18 months.
