Waga Energy chosen to enhance RNG production plant

Hillsborough County selects Waga Energy for landfill gas upgrade. Waga Energy will implement its patented WAGABOX technology at the Southeast County Landfill in Lithia, Florida. This initiative aims to produce over 610,000 MMBtu of renewable natural gas annually, significantly reducing carbon emissions and enhancing local energy resilience.


Hillsborough County in west-central Florida has chosen Waga Energy, a leader in renewable natural gas (RNG) production from landfills, to enhance the landfill gas at the Southeast County Landfill in Lithia. The project will use Waga Energy’s proprietary WAGABOX technology to upgrade the gas to pipeline-quality RNG.

The facility is designed to process up to 3,000 standard cubic feet per minute of landfill gas, generating over 610,000 MMBtu (180 GWh) of RNG annually. This RNG will be supplied to the local pipeline network for at least 20 years, marking a significant step in reducing carbon emissions by up to 47,500 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent each year. This reduction equates to avoiding the CO₂ emissions from the consumption of 4.2 million gallons of diesel. The project underscores the circular economy by reducing dependency on fossil fuels and providing a sustainable energy source for the community.

Waga Energy’s WAGABOX technology is a result of 15 years of development, merging membrane filtration with cryogenic distillation to effectively upgrade landfill gas. This technology ensures consistent production of pipeline-quality RNG, adapting to variations in landfill gas flow and composition.
