The world’s leading electric and hybrid marine technology trade fair opens in six weeks!

The world’s leading exhibition and conference for maritime electrification, decarbonization and GHG reduction solutions is returning to Amsterdam in June 2024!

Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe

Exhibitors at the free-to-attend Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe will showcase new electric and hybrid marine transportation and propulsion solutions, shore charging equipment and efficient emerging technologies to help realize zero-emission shipping and net zero. Visitors will be able to browse and ask in-depth questions to the experts on hand about the line-up of top technologies for the electrification and hybridization of workboats, ferries, superyachts and other marine vessels, plus port and harbor infrastructure.

Leading companies across the exhibition floor will include ABB, Corvus Energy, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Lehmann Marine, Twin Disc, The Switch Engineering Oy, Volta and Wärtsilä. Early exhibitor news ahead of the event includes reveals carbon-free ammonia-to-electrical power systems, e-outboards; lithium-ion battery solutions, battery emulation, battery testing and fuel cell emulation solutions, hybrid systems, energy storage systems and hydrogen fuel cells, shore power solutions for tanker vessels and solid-state DC breakers.

Alongside this, Cavotec, a leading cleantech firm that manufactures connection and electrification solutions, will be displaying its next-gen turnkey DC charging system for electric vessels. This comprehensive system integrates a high-power electronic module with Cavotec’s Megawatt Charging System (MCS) and an MCS inlet, installed on vessels or vehicles. For enhanced versatility, an optional battery storage module is available to manage energy peaks or supplement limited grid capacity.

At the expo, Bosch Engineering will present its new electric drive system platform (EDSP), designed for recreational and commercial boats. EDSP combines Bosch’s electric motors, inverters and transmissions with components such as high-voltage batteries, chargers and wiring diagrams. Users receive comprehensive information and tools to integrate the high-voltage drive system into the overall concept of the boat as quickly and efficiently as possible. This includes a system guideline, standardized control unit software and all-around support during integration and commissioning.

RIX Industries will also present its M2H2 reformers, which produce fuel cell-ready 99.97% pure hydrogen on demand. This negates the necessity for complex hydrogen storage and transport. Now configurable with PEM fuel cells, this new integrated design not only improves energy efficiency but also ease of implementation. With a modular, scalable design, systems integrate into existing shipboard infrastructures with minimal retrofit.

Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe Conference

Taking place alongside the exhibition is the Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe Conference – the only international conference dedicated to the electrification and hybridization of marine vessels, along with the associated supporting infrastructure for ports, charging, fueling and energy supply.

With over 70 speakers and nine conference tracks, Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe Conference will enable attendees to discover the latest projects and trends from major shipowners and operators, classification societies and respected academics. It will also provide instant access to US maritime policymakers and funding opportunities, and the new technologies critical to saving fuel, improving efficiency and reducing emissions.

Among the esteemed specialists at the dedicated conference (rates apply) will be Sverre Eriksen, senior principal engineer at DNV. In his talk, Eriksen will discuss how to make a safe battery installation. He’ll focus on the threats and barriers that must be considered to make a safe battery installation on a ship. The expert will also address the latest DNV class rules for EES systems and the new DNV class guideline ‘Safety philosophy for EES systems’.

Tobias Kohl, director of application engineering – marine at Rolls-Royce Solutions, will present the Liberty Lines hybrid case study to discuss how to protect the environment without compromising performance. In 2021, Liberty Lines embarked on a plan to renew its entire fleet of high-speed ferries to minimize the environmental impact of its operations. Operations demand the carrying of 250 passengers per ferry at a cruising speed of at least 28kts. Some of the longer crossings are nearly 100 nautical miles, so propulsion solutions based on pure batteries or hydrogen were rejected as not technically feasible. Liberty Lines contracted for 12 new vessels, the first to obtain RINA Green Plus classification. They will navigate in fully electric mode near ports and recharge their batteries in the open sea. During long periods of stopover, the ships will use cold ironing to recharge the batteries and keep all the onboard services active to help lower the CO₂ footprint. This presentation will provide a more detailed overview of this exciting project.

Håvard Vollset Lien, vice president of research and innovation at Vard Group, and Øystein Longva, chief technical officer (CTO) of Vard Electro, will give a joint presentation about charging battery-powered vessels at sea. This presentation describes an innovative battery charging solution for offshore use on board vessels working in offshore wind. In March 2024, the solution was tested at full scale in the North Sea by the SOV Rem Power, demonstrating that it is fully feasible to charge large battery-powered vessels in an open-water environment. The presentation will present the findings and experiences from the tests, the challenges, and how they were solved, as well as the supporting activities of the project.

Additionally, the winners of this year’s Electric & Hybrid Marine Awards will be revealed at the exhibitor hall party on June 18, at Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe 2024 in Amsterdam. Following the expansion of the categories in 2023, the 2024 awards retain a strong focus on environmentally conscious technologies and initiatives, as well as new advances in charging, hydrogen and shoreside technologies.
