Spain’s TSO Red Eléctrica put together the REVE map (Electric Vehicle Charging Point Network), a dynamic tool that geographically locates more than 80% of public charging points.

Developed by the country’s transmission system operator (TSO) Red Eléctrica, the map makes available in real time the characteristics, availability, and price of charging for more than 25,600 points. This number will expand to include all this type of infrastructure in the country as operators transfer their charging point data to Red Eléctrica.

The map forms part of a larger package of measures coming from the Spanish government to promote e-mobility within the country.

Publicly accessible charging infrastructure with a capacity of 43kW or more is required to submit dynamic information of this type, as the highest power points are the most relevant for spot charging, especially for intercity travel. However, operators are also encouraged to include information on other charging infrastructure, such as that available in parking lots or other public spaces.

The map was announced by Vice President and Minister for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Sara Aagesen, within the framework of the fifth meeting of the Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Working Group (GTIRVE).

Said Aagesen: “From the Government, we have not stopped working for a minute to promote a favourable ecosystem for both the acquisition and manufacture of electric vehicles, thanks to our strong automotive sector. And that commitment, as President Sánchez explained last week, is reinforced by the €14.1 billion ($15.4 billion) Trade Response and Relaunch Plan to mitigate the impact of US tariffs.

“This tool will always be looking ahead, integrating the new public charging points that are being installed in our country every day. And there are many: the sector estimates that, by the fourth quarter of 2024, 3,302 public charging points will have been launched, with an average of 1,100 units per month. This is the highest year-on-year figure in the entire historical series. Although we have already integrated 80% of the market, taking into account the data recorded in RIPREE, we have contacted 189 operators, who will provide us with additional information to continue completing the REVE map.”

Real-time information on charging points

With the aim of providing reliable, real-time information on available charging infrastructure, Royal Decree-Law 4/2024 mandated Red Eléctrica to develop a dynamic information system for electric charging points to comply with Law 7/2021, of May 20, on Climate Change and Energy Transition.

This system is reflected in REVE, with the ultimate objective of providing consumers with real-time information on the location of public charging points so they can more appropriately plan their trips, promoting and facilitating electric mobility.

Said Aagesen: “We wanted to start with the information provided by the top 10 operators, with these more than 26,000 charging stations, because we want to contribute to dispelling the illusions surrounding electric mobility as soon as possible. And the first conclusion is that the entire Spanish mainland is accessible to a charging point within 50 kilometres.”

According to Red Eléctrica, REVE has up-to-date information on the availability of charging points—indicating whether each one is available, occupied, reserved, or out of service—and the price of the service, taking into account the different rates associated with it, such as the price of energy (€/kWh), price per charging time, maximum charging power, price per charging point occupancy, payment method, etc.

Additionally, Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), with the support of the General Secretariat for Digital Administration of the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Service, is developing a mobile application that will allow users to consult, on a single platform, information on charging points and service stations.
