South East Water and Landis+Gyr reduce non-revenue water losses

UK-headquartered multinational firm South East Water, through its technology arm Iota, is partnering with Landis+Gyr to help utilities in Australia and New Zealand to reduce non-revenue water losses.

South East Water will provide its leak detection sensor Scotto for integration with Landis+Gyr’s smart water meters to help utilities access real-time data regarding events happening within their water distribution network.

The water utility has combined its sensors with some 5,000 smart water meters from Landis+Gyr across its network in Melbourne.

Andrew Forster-Knight, general manager digital utility at South East Water, said: “This technology will be a game-changer for our network. Access to real-time network visibility will enable us to gain a better understanding of asset health and inform our maintenance schedules and planning process. From our customers’ perspective, it will help us to fix leaks before they cause disruptions. It will also enable us to reduce non-revenue water losses, which saves money and conserves our precious water resources.”

Using technology to improve water conservation is a key focus of South East Water as part of the utility’s climate change mitigation strategy.

The water utility has committed to achieving net-zero emissions across its operations by 2030 by using renewable energy, water efficiency, energy efficiency, and electric vehicle technologies. As of 30 July 2021, South East Water achieved a 38% carbon emissions reduction milestone across its business operations.

In addition to enhancing its services using technology, combining the sensor with Landis+Gyr’s smart water meters will provide other UK utilities with smart metering, grid edge intelligence and smart infrastructure for sustainable water management and improved customer services, according to a statement.
