SmartestEnergy partners with CWP Energy on hybrid PPA

SmartestEnergy partners with CWP Energy on Sanquhar II project. The collaboration secures a significant Power Purchase Agreement, advancing the Sanquhar II Wind Farm in Scotland. SmartestEnergy will contract 186MW, representing nearly two-thirds of the wind farm’s output. The project is set to power approximately 335,000 homes annually.

SmartestEnergy has forged a strategic alliance with CWP Energy to manage electricity and certificates from the Sanquhar II Wind Farm. Located in south-west Scotland, this 308MW facility is under construction and poised to become the UK’s fourth-largest onshore wind farm. SmartestEnergy will contract nearly two-thirds of the output, equating to 186MW, which underscores the scale of this partnership.

Rod Wood MBE, Managing Director at CWP Energy, highlighted the significance of this Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), noting SmartestEnergy’s role in advancing the project and supporting their long-term commercial strategy. Wood stated that SmartestEnergy’s flexibility and expertise were pivotal to structuring a robust, future-focused solution.

James Clark, Business Development Manager at SmartestEnergy, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, emphasizing their tailored hybrid PPA solution. He noted their expertise in compliance and regulatory requirements as crucial to managing volatility and intermittency challenges associated with large transmission-connected assets.

CWP Energy, which operates nine UK wind farms with a combined capacity of 335MW, sought a reliable market route for the Sanquhar II project. SmartestEnergy, supported by the Marubeni Corporation, delivered competitive market access and commercial flexibility, essential for the project’s success.

Robert Groves, CEO at SmartestEnergy, highlighted the partnership’s role in strengthening their market position and expanding their renewable generation portfolio. The deal supports their C&I business offering, including the Traceable Renewable Supply product, aiding businesses in tracking their energy supply.

The Sanquhar II project, featuring 44 wind turbines, is expected to generate enough renewable energy to power around 335,000 homes annually. As the wind farm progresses, SmartestEnergy and CWP Energy are set to fortify their collaboration, advancing large-scale clean energy initiatives.
