As part of its Smart Nicosia smart city initiative, the historical capital of Cyprus has started a smart water meter rollout.

Under the slogan of ‘Put water in the groove’, the Nicosia Municipality and Nicosia Water Board are partnering in what will be a 150,000 city-wide smart water meter rollout.

Under an MoU between the two parties, Smart Nicosia will make available its know-how, systems and infrastructure to the Water Board for the installation of meters, which is starting with an initial 3,000 meter pilot in the walled city.

The smart water meters and continuous monitoring of the network are planned to lead to a reduction of water losses due to leaks both in customers’ premises and in the water supply zones and is considered an important step towards excellence in water resources management and the ‘green’ development of the city.

“Water is vital,” commented the Mayor of Nicosia, Constantinos Yiorkadjis

“In countries like ours that have always had to fight the shortage of this precious commodity, its proper use and the prevention of losses is imperative and that is why we consider this cooperation of smart water management with the Water Board extremely important!”

In the pilot, the first 1,500 meters that are installed will use the LoRa network and the Smart Nicosia platform, while the second batch of 1,500 meters will use the NB-IoT network.

The meters are Diehl Metering’s Hydrus ultrasonic meters.

The project is being implemented under Cyprus’s ‘Thaleia 2021-2027’ cohesion policy programme with co-financing from the EU.

The Smart Nicosia smart city initiative is implementing a range of infrastructures, including fibre and wi-fi networks, smart parking system, smart lighting, environmental sensors and digital signage along with a smart city command and control centre.
