Smart meters help Danish company record €135,000 in annual savings

Himmerland Boligforening, a Danish housing association, has announced that it has so far achieved €135,000 in savings per annum owing to smart meters the company has deployed for heat, water and electric customers.

The smart metering project deployed in partnership with technology firms Kamstrup and BA Technologies is a result of a sustainability strategy that the real estate firm adopted in 2016.

Himmerland Boligforening set a target to reduce heating and electricity consumption by 30% by 2030 compared to 2014 levels.

Some smart meters supplied by Kamstrup were deployed to enable some 29,000 households to monitor heat, water and electricity usage in near real-time to enhance efficiency, according to a statement.

Kamstrup’s READy remote reading system was also integrated to enable Himmerland Boligforening to accurately and remotely access consumer usage patterns.

BA Technologies provided a software validation of data, consumption settlement and a user portal, that allows the residents to have a complete overview of their water, heat and electricity consumption

As a result, both the consumer and Himmerland Boligforening are able to access usage data on an hourly basis.

Previously, Himmerland Boligforening read consumer heat usage once per annum resulting in estimated billing and high non-revenue heat or overcharging of consumers.

The old heat meters replaced by the smart meters also read consumption in kilowatt-hours and not the volume consumption or temperatures, meaning consumers could not access near real-time usage data which they are now leveraging to optimise usage.

Anders Kjeldsen, Energy and Climate Specialist at Himmerland Boligforening said: “Our best tool for finding potential energy savings is data – consumption data from meters.

“With the old meters we had very little data, and it was difficult to find, for example, defective hot water exchangers. With the new Kamstrup meters, we have access to much more data, and we can quickly detect defects that would otherwise have led to large additional costs. I can pull out the information I need, and in five seconds I can see if there are installations with poor cooling. I’ve never had such a good overview of meters before.”

The smart meters are enabling the real estate firm to detect water and heat leaks and quickly address them resulting in a reduction in non-revenues.
