Siemens to deliver another 175,000 smart meters for Egypt
Siemens is to supply 175,000 smart meters and an advanced distribution management system in the Damietta region in the Nile delta.
The order to the North Delta Electricity Distribution Company (NDEDC) forms part of the company’s grid modernisation and upgrade programme and has a value of approximately €40 million (US$42 million).
Funding is from the Japanese International Cooperation Agency, which has supported several projects in Egypt’s electricity sector.
Dr Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, commented that the agreement falls within a national plan for establishing a number of control centres in the light of presidential directives to promote the efficiency of the country’s transmission and distribution grids.

“Additionally, the control centres aim to enhance performance, quality and stability of the power supply, by relying on the most advanced IT applications and smart systems to ensure smart management of grids.”
NDEDC is a subsidiary of the state-owned utility Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC), with responsibility for the distribution network of the Daqahleya, Damietta and Kafr El-Sheikh governorates in the northeast of Egypt and serving about 4.5 million electrical subscribers.
In addition to raising the efficiency of the energy distribution system, other planned outcomes of the project are to reduce energy losses and power outages, improve service quality and transform the electricity distribution network into a smart network.
As part of the project, Siemens will also be delivering ESRI’s geographical information system.
The order is the second of its type in the last half of 2022 and follows the September order for 300,000 smart meters and two advanced distribution management systems for the Alexandria Electricity Distribution Company in the city of Alexandria.
