Siemens launches ‘co-pilot’ for DSO-level grid management

Siemens has launched LV Management within their Gridscale X offering, which they claim will provide grid operators additional insights and transparency over what is happening on the low voltage grid.

Part of Siemens’ Xcelerator portfolio, Gridscale X LV Management supports Distribution System Operators (DSOs) to manage the grid, providing observability and control features.

According to Siemens, the continuous and automated steps of detecting, assessing and acting enables DSOs to quickly leverage untapped grid capacity while maintaining reliability. Siemens says that with the new offering, DSOs can reduce model maintenance efforts by 50%.

“With Gridscale X LV Management, DSOs can move towards flexible and autonomous grid management. By actively controlling and visualising the low voltage grid, they can reduce outages by up to 30%, stabilise the grid, protect assets and accelerate grid digitalisation,” said Sabine Erlinghagen, CEO Siemens Grid Software, in a release.

Gridscale X LV Management includes advanced grid model building capabilities, allowing users to create and maintain a grid model, which Siemens says is the first step towards creating a digital twin of the grid, reducing complexity and breaking down data silos.

The software provides an intelligent agent – or ‘co-pilot’, says Siemens – that guides operators through the assessment and resolution of issues.

It also supports operators with grid stabilisation capabilities to address grid congestion and resolve both unplanned and planned outages, enabling DSOs to operate the grid closer to its limits and activate grid flexibility at the low voltage level by leveraging traditional grid assets.

LV Management was announced during Eurelectric’s Power Summit in Athens and falls under the Gridscale X offering, launched earlier this year in February, enabling utilities to scale grid capacity and increase visibility over distributed energy resources (DERs).
