Sense debuts innovative home energy monitoring system at Enlit Europe

Schneider Electric and Landis+Gyr-backed machine learning firm Sense is debuting its artificial intelligence-based home energy monitoring technology to industry stakeholders at Enlit Europe in Milan.

For the first time, decision-makers present at Enlit Europe, which runs from 30 November to 2 December, are able to see the live demonstration of how Sense’s real-time load disaggregation technology works.

The technology helps consumers shift their energy consumption to periods of the day where energy prices are lower or when the grid is under less stress, which saves costs for energy suppliers and network operators.

In a pilot conducted with Ohmconnect, consumers recorded a reduction in home energy usage by 18%.

Sense’s real-time interaction engages users far more frequently than traditional utility portals, translating into reduced energy consumption in the home and more effective demand response programmes.

The study found that energy savings delivered by joint Sense and OhmConnect users were much higher than those realised in other behaviour-based demand response programmes run by utilities, which typically yield less than 4% savings

The Massachusetts-based energy technology firm uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to detect energy anomalies at the grid edge before they become costly problems. This in turn helps utilities to enhance the management of the grid for reliability and improved customer services.

Grid edge intelligence translates into power cost savings for energy suppliers, and reduced investment and operating costs for grid operators, according to a statement.

Sense claims its solution enables utilities to accelerate the decarbonisation of energy networks in a cost-effective manner as well as address energy transition challenges.

Earlier this year, Sense partnered with renewable energy developer BayWa r.e. to provide real-time data to customers with onsite solar systems. The data enables customers to track their solar power generation and match it with their home electricity usage for energy reliability.

Managing Director-International at Sense, Michael Jary, said: “The energy transition demands innovation at the grid edge that engages end users. During the show, we’ll be demonstrating how the Sense app can fully engage users with utility programmes for demand response, load shifting and energy efficiency.”

Sense will be scheduling demos at stand 12.D82.
