Sense and Landis+Gyr have announced a collaboration to bring 1MHz sampling to the latter’s Revelo metering platform.

Such high sampling rates, operating within the meter itself, can feed a new class of AI models, provide utilities with an ultra-high-resolution view of the distribution grid, and support the next generation of consumer applications.

Specific use cases include arc fault detection, with the identification of electrical faults in real time to prevent fires, equipment damage and service disruptions.

Grid reliability should be improved with continuous monitoring of device-level usage to anticipate demand spikes, abnormal behaviour and potential outages, as should operational efficiency with a reduction of unnecessary service calls and manual inspections through remote diagnostics.

For customers, personalised actionable energy insights can be provided through the existing utility infrastructure.

Mike Phillips, CEO of Sense, said that utilities are under increasing pressure to maintain safety, reliability, and efficiency while adapting to a more complex grid.

“When 1MHz processing is combined with on-meter AI, utilities get real-time visibility and actionable intelligence, including the ability to detect arc faults and other safety threats before they escalate.”

Prasanna Venkatesan, EVP and Head of Americas at Landis+Gyr, said the company is excited to further its groundbreaking relationship with Sense.

“As we expand the capabilities of the Revelo platform with cutting-edge sensing and edge intelligence, we continue to push the boundaries of grid innovation.”

The collaboration, which includes the semiconductor industry, was announced at Distributech and extends a long standing partnership between the two companies.

At Distributech Landis+Gyr also announced an expanded partnership with Span to commercialise its edge service point, Span Edge, which enables homeowners to add EV chargers, heat pumps, batteries and more to unlock flexibility.

The product, which is designed to be installed by a utility technician in less than 15 minutes, is intended as a low cost solution to address load growth and distribution network challenges while delivering a superior end-customer experience.
