A 250kW maritime lithium-cobalt battery called SAFE-Li has been released by Sealence, which states it has best-in-class safety characteristics and energy density.

Designed for application to electrically propelled yachts measuring 12m-18m in length, the battery benefits from an 83kWh capacity and 250kW of power at 450V. The battery measures 900 x 800 x 600 and weighs 550kg.

The company’s latest battery was designed with safety as a main focus – and Sealence states this particular battery cannot catch fire. This is made possible as the SAFE-Li battery pack is entirely immersed in a flame-retardant liquid which prevents serious damage in one cell spreading to another. This ensures no chain reactions between cells can occur.

The SAFE-Li battery is equipped with intelligent software algorithms and controlled by a battery management system which is capable of transmitting a wide range of data, charging information and battery health status to phones or computers. Over the air software updates are also possible.
