Iberdrola-owned energy company ScottishPower has announced that a savings programme launched six months ago for their smart meter customers has reduced energy bills by £2 million ($2.7 million).

The programme, ‘half price electricity at weekends’ brought in over 275,000 smart meter customers since launching in the UK in November last year.

The discount initiative followed a successful six-week trial that showed customers could save up to £300 ($399) per annum depending on how they used their energy.

According to ScottishPower, they are currently the only energy supplier in the UK to offer its customers the discounted rate over both weekend days, with the discounted rate available to its smart meter customers every Saturday and Sunday between 11am and 4pm.

Commenting in a release was Andrew Ward, chief executive of ScottishPower’s Customer Business: “We know our customers are savvy when it comes to reducing their energy use and are always keen to take advantage of initiatives that can help reduce their bills.

“Through half-price weekends we’ve seen significant savings made, now over the two million pounds mark in just six months, and the savings are ongoing. This success of this initiative has not just helped our customers’ pockets, it is also raising awareness of the benefits of using less energy at peak times and encourage shifting usage to other periods of the day.”

Adds Ward: “By working together with our customers, we can ease pressure on the energy network, meaning that the need for energy from fossil fuel sources can be lessened. This in turn benefits our customer’s pockets and benefits the environment too.”
