E.ON subsidiary electricity and gas DSO Delgaz Grid has reported completing an over 56 million lei (US$11.9 million) smart meter investment in northeastern city Iasi.

The project, which was co-financed from the European Regional Development Fund, saw the installation of over 10,000 smart meters along with data concentrators as well as the modernisation of the distribution network with the replacement of 8.8km of cables and over 1,800 electric panels.

With the completion of the project, Delgaz Grid reports having approximately 425,000 smart meters installed, of which over 300,000 are integrated into the smart metering system.

In a statement Delgaz Grid says consumers will benefit from the increase in the quality of services through more efficient energy management facilities, but also by improving the degree of continuity of electricity distribution.

In the coming years Delgaz Grid plans to instal another approximately 900,000 smart meters in two ongoing projects with financing of 626 million lei from the modernization fund.

With this by 2029, approximately 1.4 million meters should be in operation, corresponding to a penetration of approximately 85% of the company’s customers.

In November Delgaz Grid launched an app for smart metering customers to enable them to monitor and manage their consumption.

In November also the company finalised a €200 million (US$210 million) loan for the modernisation and automation of the distribution network in the Moldova region from the European Investment Bank.

The loan is expected to benefit more than 1.5 million homes and businesses in the region, covering a grid of over 80,000km.

It also should advance the Carpathian Energy Network (CARMEN) project, one of the smart grid ‘projects of common interest’, to improve the interconnection between Romania and Bulgaria by 2028 as well as support the ongoing smart meter rollout.
