Public Service Electric & Gas Co (PSE&G) has announced surpassing the two million smart meter milestone in its New Jersey service area.

With this its smart meter coverage of residential and business customers is approaching 85%, with a total of around 2.4 million smart meters due to be installed.

PSE&G’s smart meter programme is aimed at enhancing customer insights and supporting faster outage recovery, a company statement reads.

“This is a critical milestone on the path to an improved customer experience enabling our customers with even greater access to understanding and managing their energy use,” said Dave Johnson, Vice President Customer Care and Chief Customer Officer.

“There are already more than 110 million smart meters installed across the US and we’re pleased to support this roll out across our electric service territory. With this key step, consumers have access to data so they can make informed choices and take action that impacts their energy usage.”

Over time, the smart meters should deliver a number of benefits, including more frequent and detailed status on power, increased clarity on bills with the elimination of most estimated bills and more efficient power restoration following storms being better equipped to determine the scope of power outages and more efficiently dispatch repair crews.

Customers have access to the ‘MyMeter’ online portal providing a view of how customers use electricity and offering a number of tools and resources to help manage electricity use to save energy and money.

For example, customers can view their electricity use by time and date intervals, from 15-minutes to monthly, create energy-use thresholds and receive usage alerts and complete an online home energy assessment.

PSE&G’s smart meters are being provided by Landis+Gyr with connection to its Gridstream Connect AMI platform under a 10-year agreement signed in July 2021.

The Middle Atlantic census region, of which New Jersey is a part, along with New York and Pennsylvania, is lagging the rest of the US – apart from the New England division – recording a smart meter penetration of 44% at the end of 2022, according to FERC’s 2024 assessment.

At that time the penetration averaged across all regions was 72%, marginally higher at residential level than among the commercial and industrial classes.
