Ports of Stockholm to establish shore power connections

Shore power connections for cruise ships are to be established by Ports of Stockholm at two different locations. With cruise tourism an important source of income for Stockholm, the port will work with others in the Baltic Sea to create a sustainable cruise destination.

A turnkey contract has been signed by PSW Power & Automation for the installation of two high-voltage shore power systems, with an output of 8MVA and 16MVA. The company will design and manufacture the entire shore power system including the high-voltage electrical infrastructure. It will also raise the buildings on the chosen sites ahead of the first cruise ships connecting to the supply in 2023 and 2024.

“Cruise passengers are very important to Stockholm financially and generate over 1,000 jobs in the region,” commented Joakim Larsson, city commissioner responsible for Ports of Stockholm. “Onshore power connections in Stockholm are part of an important joint environmental investment, together with other Baltic Sea ports, to create an international class sustainable cruise destination.”

The shore power solution has been designed as a compact module-based frequency converter system with integrated remote access and monitoring. The system is set to improve environmental areas around the Ports of Stockholm as cruise ships can consume up to 60,000 liters of fuel and emit huge amounts of CO2 when moored.

“The shore power market is an important part of our contribution to the decarbonization of the shipping industry. We are currently working on several exciting potential projects in Europe and as part of our international focus area this contract is of great importance,” said Eirik Sørensen, general manager, PSW Power & Automation.
