Poland’s TSO commissions data analysis across 20mn metering points
As part of a commission by Poland’s TSO PSE, smart meter data from 20 million metering points in Poland will be collated and analysed to enhance the country’s retail energy market.
PSE commissioned IT and business consulting firm CGI to implement a new Central Energy Market Information System (CSIRE), which is intended to simplify and improve data exchange on the Polish retail electricity market by standardising the information processes and standards of utility companies.
To this end, CGI is partnering with developers KX, to use their kdb database and analysis engine to support the management of large amounts of meter data and complex analytics for a market size estimated at 20 million metering points across the country.
“We chose KX specifically for its ability to process and manage time-series data in a fast and scalable manner. The number of smart meters used, and thus also the data volume, will continue to increase significantly over time,” said Mattijs van den Hoed, VP consulting, CGI.
“Together with KX, we are perfectly positioned to help Poland revolutionise the energy sector and accelerate development towards a smarter, cleaner and more flexible energy system that includes meter data with higher frequency and a scaling towards real-time data.”

With the help of the PSE system, CGI will support the collection and processing of the necessary information and metering data from the electricity market.
This data is required to drive increased competition in the retail electricity market, offer new value-added services, implement new business models and drive innovation.
Poland’s TSO points to efficient data management from these measuring points, which are expected to deliver 7 billion readings per day, as crucial for success.
Enabled by KX’s Cloud TIME Series data and analytics solution, CGI and PSE will validate incoming data to ensure that process data is available to all market participants.
In addition, they will provide aggregated data to support market settlement, which is hoped to be beneficial both for PSE’s nationwide activities and for Polish households, businesses and the utility sector as a whole by:
- Increasing competition in the retail energy market
- Developing new business models and value-added services
- Improving customer retention
- Generating fewer errors and more efficient use of energy
“Meter data is computationally intensive, requiring the analysis and management of massive amounts of streaming time-series data.
“The KX Data Timehouse, with the kdb+ time series database at its core, was built for this moment,” said James Corcoran, KX chief growth officer.
