Polish DSO Enea Operator has selected four partners to supply a total of almost 3 million smart meters by 2030.

The tender awards are to the PPH Politech-Iskraemeco consortium, Sagemcom Poland, Apator and Landis+Gyr.

In the first call these manufacturers will provide Enea Operator with 600,000 remote reading meters and a total of 3 million units by 2030.

Marek Szymankiewicz, President of Enea Operator, said in a statement that the purchase of the meters is not only aimed at meeting its legal obligation under the Energy Law but also that the data obtained from the meters will contribute to the optimal use of funds from the investment plan for the expansion and modernisation of the network.

“The functionalities that will be implemented in the meters will allow for better management and monitoring of energy consumption by consumers, and will enable the company to obtain current data on the quality of electricity supplied, flexible management of the operation and development of the distribution network, which is particularly important in the current energy transition.”

Enea Operator is budgeting PLN250 million ($62.5 million) for the first batch of smart meters and ultimately intends to allocate nearly PLN1.3 billion ($325 million).

The four partners were selected from a total of 29 applicant entities.

Among the innovations to be included is communication with Enea Operator’s metering system utilising GSM-based eSIM.

With the contracts signed Enea Operator has indicated working with the companies with the aim to get the deployment scheduled for the second half of 2025 under way as soon as possible.

With this the DSO will be able to start benefitting from the smart meter data, in particular around more effective management of the distribution network and improvement in other company processes.
