As it launches an EV leasing business in Germany, Octopus Energy has also announced plans to introduce its vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology to the country.

Octopus Energy will bring its innovations in V2G tech, developed and launched in the UK, over to the German market.

The company says the initiative, which does not yet have a date, marks the next step toward an energy system powered by cars as much as by power plants.

Earlier this year, the company announced a partnership with global EV giant BYD, releasing the ‘Power Pack Bundle’ for their home market in the UK. The bundle includes a leased V2G-ready BYD Dolphin, a bidirectional Zaptec Pro charger and access to a smart tariff that offers free home charging.

Those same innovations, says the company, will soon be making their way to Germany, where approximately 125,000 V2G-ready cars would be able to power the city of Munich for an hour.

Octopus’ plans were announced alongside the launch of the company’s EV leasing business in Germany, Octopus Electric Vehicles (Octopus EV), bringing over the company’s EV package from the UK.

Within the package, German drivers will be able to get an electric car, home charger, access to the Octopus’ roaming service, Octopus Electroverse, and a smart energy tariff.

Octopus’ Intelligent Octopus smart tariff enables drivers to save on expenses by automatically charging when energy is cheapest and greenest.

Since launching in 2018, Octopus EV has grown to become the UK’s leading fully EV leasing company, helping more than 35,000 UK drivers switch to electric.

Commenting in a release was Fiona Howarth, founder and director of Octopus Electric Vehicles: “Germany is a powerhouse in the automotive industry, and the home of some of our most-loved EV brands.

“With shared values around great technology and reliable, trusted service, we wanted our European debut to be in Germany.”
Octopus Energy first entered the German market in 2020, now claiming more than 800,000 customers.

Octopus Electric Vehicles’ German offer will be available to customers in early 2026, allowing drivers to sign up online and arrange for their electric car, charger installation, and Octopus Energy tariff.
