The UK’s second largest energy supplier has launched Octoplus, a demand response-focused rewards programme, to incentivise consumers to reduce their electricity load at peak hours.

The rewards scheme is designed to empower smart meter customers to take control of their energy usage in exchange for benefits and prizes.

Octoplus users will be able to earn ‘Octopoints’ by using demand flexibility schemes like Octopus’s ‘Saving Sessions’ and by maintaining a healthy energy account.

Specifically, Octopoints can be earned through a number of different ways, for example:

  • Participating in Saving Sessions, where users are rewarded for curbing electricity consumption during times of peak energy demand;
  • Spinning Octopus’ Wheel of Fortune, which customers can do every time a meter reading is submitted;
  • Referring a friend to switch to Octopus Energy or participating in Octopus’ solar installation scheme.

Customers can redeem their Octopoints for account credits and will be able to make charity donations or exchange them for Octopus Energy merchandise, with more rewards in entertainment and food to follow.

Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, Chief Product Officer at Octopus Energy, commented in a release: “Our customers have been so passionate about earning Octopoints through our previous demand flexibility schemes that we’re very excited to give them even more ways to do so.

“With Octoplus, our savviest customers can now make their Octopoints go even further, converting them into brilliant prizes, merchandise and soon even more rewards through trusted partners.”

To be eligible for Octoplus, customers will have to receive electricity from Octopus Energy, have an operational electric smart meter (i.e receiving half hourly readings from it) and pay via Direct Debit. Business customers and smart prepayment customers will also be able to join Octoplus.

Octopus Energy serves 5.8 million customers through its retail arm, and has licensed its advanced data and machine learning platform, Kraken, to support 40 million customer accounts worldwide through licensing deals with energy companies, including EDF, E.ON and Origin Energy.
