NORD extends IE5+ motor range to 11 kW

NORD has extended its IE5+ motor range to 11 kW. The move broadens the company’s high-efficiency drive offer for intralogistics and other applications with long operating hours and variable loads.

NORD DRIVESYSTEMS has extended its IE5+ permanent magnet synchronous motor range to 11 kW, broadening a platform it is positioning as a higher-efficiency option for conveyor, handling and wider intralogistics applications.

The move takes the range from smaller outputs up to 11 kW across three sizes, with continuous torque from 1.6Nm to 43.9Nm. NORD says the motors can deliver efficiency of up to 95% across a wide torque band, a characteristic aimed at applications that spend much of their operating life in partial-load and variable-speed conditions rather than steady full-load running.

That operating profile matters in warehouse, conveyor and sortation systems, where conventional oversizing and weaker part-load performance can erode energy gains over time. By pushing a broader power band into the same IE5+ family, NORD is also seeking to reduce the number of motor variants customers carry across a site, easing spare-parts management and standardisation.

Jorg Niermann, Head of Marketing at NORD, said: “Particularly in spacious intralogistics systems with many drives and long operating times, this provides significant advantages.”

The company is also framing the update as a materials story as much as an efficiency one. NORD says the 8-pole motors use an internal permanent magnet design that reduces the size of active components, while single-tooth winding cuts copper use in the winding head. That reflects a broader shift in the drives market, where suppliers are under pressure to improve both operating efficiency and material intensity rather than rely on headline motor class claims alone.

The expanded IE5+ line remains closely linked to NORD’s wider modular system. Options include motor-integrated encoders, integrated mechanical brakes and flange mountings for direct connection to gear units, while combinations with NORDAC ON inverters and UNICASE helical bevel gear units are being presented as packaged drive solutions.

That systems approach is likely to appeal most in larger intralogistics installations, where commissioning, fleet consistency and lifecycle support can weigh as heavily as motor efficiency. The argument is straightforward: lower running losses, fewer variants and a quicker return where duty cycles are long and the number of installed drives is high.

As users place greater scrutiny on total cost of ownership, the expansion to 11 kW gives NORD a broader opportunity to make that case in applications that sit above entry-level conveyor duties but still demand strong efficiency across changing load points.
