Hundreds of global suppliers, notably from the manufacturing sector, have joined forces in an unprecedented peer-to-peer network designed to enhance sustainability performance.
This initiative, spearheaded by the global ESG rating agency EcoVadis, offers a secure environment for suppliers to collaborate, share insights, and address the intricate challenges of sustainability amidst increasing scrutiny on supply chain emissions and human rights due diligence.
The initial pilot involved around 400 suppliers from diverse sectors such as manufacturing, construction, freight transport, computer programming, and data processing, with 60 based in the UK. Projections suggest that membership could swell to 15,000 by the close of 2026, potentially expanding to tens of thousands as more suppliers within EcoVadis’s global network participate.
This platform’s launch coincides with new findings revealing that 90% of surveyed UK organisations intend to hasten their low-carbon transition over the next three years. Moreover, 98% of UK business leaders view climate transition as a commercial opportunity. Research also indicates that Scope 3 emissions are, on average, 21 times greater than Scope 1 and 2 combined, underscoring the platform’s role in equipping suppliers with the knowledge necessary for environmental impact improvements.
Pierre-François Thaler, co-founder and co-CEO of EcoVadis, stated: “What research and our experience shows is that peer-to-peer engagement is a primary driver of change and learning. Many suppliers understand they need to improve their ESG performance but don’t always know how, and some can feel isolated in that journey. By bringing suppliers together in a collaborative ecosystem, we are allowing them to draw from a collective intelligence to help reduce their impact, close the execution gap and simultaneously boost their appeal to increasingly ESG-focused clients and investors — all while helping sustainability improvements snowball up the supply chain.”
The platform not only connects suppliers with peers but also grants access to expert-led discussion circles and a repository of practical case studies. This support is crucial for addressing complex issues like decarbonisation and ethical labour rights, enhancing EcoVadis ratings, and strengthening competitive business advantages.
Paul Shortland, Compliance Manager for Tier 1 Asset Management, remarked: “Without the community, I would often spend time reading and struggling to visualise the solution, often risking a solution that might be cumbersome or difficult to work with. With the community I can now get guidance on what is really needed.”
Ellie Gibbons, Development Technologist and Sustainability Lead at Hexpol TPE, commented: “The EcoVadis Community is a great place to connect with like-minded people who share a common mission. Seeing real examples of how sustainable business practices can be implemented and evidenced is incredibly valuable. I look forward to building more connections, improving my scorecard, and contributing my experience.”
Accessible to all EcoVadis-rated customers, the community platform has the potential to expand significantly. Since its inception, EcoVadis has rated over 150,000 companies globally and added more than 25,000 new rated businesses in the past year, highlighting the platform’s scalability as more suppliers join the agency’s network.
