National Grid has announced its intention to start the smart meter deployment for customers in western New York in January 2025.

National Grid expects to instal approximately 4,100 smart meters in western New York over the next two years, as replacement for meters that are nearing their end of life.

Areas to be covered include Erie County, Allegany County, Cattaraugus County and Chautauqua County.

“Smart meters are the foundation for modernising the grid and delivering on evolving customer expectations and demands,” said Mike Mokey, National Grid’s director of Advanced Metering Infrastructure.

“Customers can choose how much to interact with their new smart meter as they enjoy benefits from the wide range of features, including detailed information about energy use, and the ability to have the meter instantly notify National Grid when there’s a service interruption at their home.”

The programme follows the successful deployment of more than 450,000 smart meters in central and eastern New York.

After the initial 4,100 western New York customers receive their smart meters, the company will continue the gradual deployment in other parts of the region through 2027.

Under a 2021 agreement covering a 20-year grid modernisation project, National Grid is installing Landis+Gyr’s Revelo smart meters, including approximately 1.7 million electricity meters and 640,000 smart gas meter modules across its upstate New York service territory.

Landis+Gyr’s Gridstream Connect platform also is implemented to provide networking, edge intelligence at meters and devices, enhanced access to energy usage information and grid analytics.

This was supplemented in 2023 with an additional agreement for the deployment of 1.4 million Revelo meters by National Grid across its Massachusetts service areas, with a planned 2027 completion data.

Similarly there the Gridstream Connect platform is providing a Wi-SUN certified network, allowing for use of third-party network devices.
