MVTec develops vision technologies exhibit for the Deutsches Museum
MVTec has developed interactive exhibits for the Deutsches Museum’s “Robotics” exhibition, featuring advanced machine vision technologies. These demonstrations highlight the varied applications of machine vision in robotics, underscoring its importance in contemporary manufacturing processes. With over 25 years of experience, MVTec has been at the forefront of machine vision software development.
Since the end of 2023, the “Robotics” exhibition has featured two new exhibits, designed to make machine vision technology accessible and demonstrate its practical industrial applications. MVTec, recognised internationally for its machine vision software, was tasked by the Deutsches Museum to create these interactive presentations.
Dr. Olaf Munkelt, CEO of MVTec, expressed pride in contributing to the museum, aiming to introduce the latest industrial image processing technologies to visitors. The exhibits include demonstrations where robots learn to “see” through machine vision, recognising and locating objects, and visualisations of images captured by 3D and thermal imaging cameras.
The initiative to include MVTec in the exhibition came after its capabilities were recognised at the automatica trade fair. Dr. Frank Dittmann, the exhibition’s curator, praised MVTec’s innovative approach and its collaboration with partners throughout the development of the exhibits, which allow visitors to interact with and understand machine vision technology.
The Robotics exhibition showcases robots’ applications across various sectors, including healthcare, domestic use, education, and industry. MVTec’s exhibits aim to demonstrate the breadth of machine vision applications, from enabling robots to autonomously perform tasks to processing and visualising data from different types of cameras.
Several companies in the machine vision industry supported the creation of these exhibits, including Basler AG, Teledyne FLIR LLC, IDS Imaging Development Systems GmbH, and Falcon Illumination MV GmbH & Co. KG, each contributing essential components.
Machine vision plays a pivotal role in automation and digitisation across industries, acting as a crucial observational tool in manufacturing and logistics. It involves both hardware, such as cameras and sensors, and software for image analysis. Deep learning, a subset of artificial intelligence, represents a particularly innovative area within machine vision applications, offering new possibilities in quality assurance, completeness checks, measurements, and process monitoring.
MVTec Software GmbH stands as a leading provider of industrial image processing software, significantly influencing the field’s technological advancements. Founded in 1996 as a spin-off from the Technical University of Munich and the Bavarian Research Center for Knowledge-Based Systems (FORWISS), MVTec is headquartered in Munich, with international offices and a global sales network.
