Moslows’ £4m donation advances women’s health research

Tufts University launches a pioneering women’s health initiative. This initiative, fueled by a $4 million donation, unites expertise in medicine and nutrition to advance women’s health research and care. It aims to reshape menopause management, integrating academic and clinical resources to address gaps in women’s healthcare.

Tufts University has embarked on a transformative venture in women’s health, launching the Tufts Women’s Health and Menopause Initiative. This pioneering academic collaboration, supported by a generous $4 million gift from Jeff and Linda Moslow, integrates the expertise of Tufts University’s schools of medicine and nutrition with the Tufts Medicine health system. The initiative seeks to address the disparities in women’s healthcare, particularly in menopause management, by uniting research, education, and clinical care.

The Moslows’ contribution endows two inaugural professorships at the School of Medicine and the Friedman School, whose holders will co-direct the initiative. Under their leadership, the initiative will explore innovative approaches to enhance women’s health throughout their lives. Christina Economos, dean of the Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, highlights the collaboration’s significance, stating, “Their transformative gift is allowing us to pioneer the nation’s only academic initiative that brings together the expertise of a leading school of nutrition, medical school, and health system.”

The initiative aims to rectify the long-standing neglect in women’s health research. Jeff Moslow notes the historical oversight, pointing out that medical research often follows protocols designed for men. Tufts President Sunil Kumar emphasizes the project’s alignment with the university’s mission, stating, “This initiative is an investment not only in better care for women everywhere but also in the integrative, discovery-driven approach that defines Tufts’ impact.”

The Women’s Health Initiative of two decades ago significantly impacted women’s healthcare, linking hormone replacement therapy to increased health risks. This led to a reevaluation of menopause management, leaving many women without clear guidance. The Tufts initiative seeks to fill this gap by establishing an academic model for integrated menopause care, connecting specialists across various disciplines.

With an emphasis on education, Tufts plans to embed menopause and women’s health content within its curricula across multiple programs. It also aims to extend learning to practicing clinicians nationwide, reinforcing Tufts’ role as a hub for best-practice training. Research will be a cornerstone of the initiative, focusing on longevity, vascular aging, neurobehavioral health, and chronic disease. The creation of a national menopause outcomes registry will provide a foundation for data-driven insights to shape the future of women’s health.

Linda Moslow expresses optimism for the initiative’s potential, saying, “When research finally reflects our reality, we can make informed choices and live healthier lives.” The Moslows hope their contribution will inspire further collaboration and philanthropic support for women’s health, with Jeff Moslow stating, “If we can motivate other donors to invest in women’s health—that would be the ultimate measure of success.”

The initiative represents a significant step forward in addressing the needs of women, offering a model for universities to mobilize their expertise in service of women’s health. As the program develops, it promises to elevate the national conversation and place women’s health at the forefront of academic inquiry and public discourse.
