MGS Technical Plastics, a prominent player in the injection moulding sector, has successfully undergone a management buyout by its three directors. As of 22 January 2026, John Sturgess, who has been integral to the Blackburn-based company since 1983, has transferred equal ownership to Chairperson Neil Garrity, Managing Director Judson Smythe, and Commercial Director Mark Preston.
The management buyout signifies a crucial step in MGS Technical Plastics’ evolution. Announcing the acquisition to staff, Judson Smythe emphasised that the company’s operations and strategic objectives will remain steadfast, reinforcing its dedication to customers and community engagement. “Our focus will continue to be on delivering outstanding products and services to our customers and remain a business beacon for growth that supports our strong heritage and community engagement in the North West,” Smythe stated.
Founded with just four employees, MGS has expanded under John Sturgess’s leadership, who became Managing Director in 1991. Neil Garrity joined in 2010, followed by Judson Smythe in 2016, and Mark Preston, who initially joined in 2006, returned in 2018. The company has accelerated its growth strategy, driven by a dedicated team of over 60 professionals. Mark Preston highlighted this achievement, attributing it to strategic agility, investments in advanced manufacturing, and sustainability.
John Sturgess expressed his confidence in the new leadership, stating, “Our growth over recent years is in no small part due to the leadership and vision of Neil, Judson, and Mark as I have gradually stepped back from a customer-facing role. The time now feels right to completely hand over the business to this trio. I feel extremely proud of all that we have accomplished. But the management team now deserves the opportunity to take the business even further forward.”
Judson Smythe confirmed that this transition was a planned part of the company’s succession strategy. He acknowledged the challenges ahead but asserted the business’s strong position, citing a successful previous year marked by significant business wins and awards. “MGS remains an incredible and sustainable manufacturing business, with a strong team to lead and a rich and diverse mix of clients that we are honoured to support,” Smythe added.
The transition was supported by Lloyds, with Ria Kelsall, relationship director, commenting on MGS’s growth and the promising future under its new leadership. “Over the years MGS has grown into one of the leading manufacturers in its sector and now Judson and his team are already driving the next phase of its development,” Kelsall remarked. “It was a pleasure to be able to help them manage this transition, and I’m excited to see how this thriving business will continue to fuel growth across the North West.”
The acquisition, completed on 22 January 2026, marks a new chapter for MGS Technical Plastics, positioning the company for continued innovation and success in the manufacturing industry.
