The first pile has been driven for the construction of Energiehub Boekelermeer, a joint project of Liander, the municipality of Alkmaar and the Energy Cooperative Boekelermeer Haven in the Netherlands, consisting of a 5MWh battery, a smart network that distributes energy and digital technology.
The Energiehub project is expected to be operational by the end of 2025, allowing companies to coordinate power consumption under the direction of a Congestion Service Provider (CSP).
For the pilot project in Boekelermeer, a special energy cooperative is being set up, the Energy Cooperative Boekelermeer Haven.
Once operational, participating companies will be able to coordinate their energy consumption and make optimal use of the available capacity on the electricity grid.
This includes switching on the battery at busy times or coordinating consumption between companies. The approach is still relatively new in the Netherlands, creating space on the power grid which has been consistently full.

The construction of the battery offers future companies power so that they can do business. It is an innovative solution to tackle grid congestion together.”
Said Ruben van Loon, regional manager North Holland at Liander: “With the start of the construction is another beautiful and important step in this project.
“I am happy that we are working together to create opportunities in times of scarcity. This is only possible together with our customers and partners, such as the municipality of Alkmaar. By making flexible use of the electricity grid, Coöperatie Boekelermeer Haven is taking a big step towards the future energy system.”
In November 2024, the partners signed a letter of intent for the collaboration under a flexible group contract.
